Jammin' for Justice
On Saturday, April 18, 2015, an evening of music, fun and philanthropy will fill the air in downtown Oxford to raise money for North Mississippi Rural Legal Services (NMRLS). It's Jammin' for Justice at The Lyric Oxford, 1006 Van Buren Avenue, in Oxford, from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. "Jammin' for Justice" is a fundraiser for NMRLS, a non-profit tax exempt organization which provides free legal aid (in civil matters only) to impoverished persons living in Oxford and north Mississippi. In addition to the philanthropic opportunity, "Jammin' for Justice" promises to be an evening of live performances from blues to jazz, from easy listening to the latest in R&B, along with a "little bit country and a little bit rock and roll". Along with the band, there will be disc jockey Jeff Donald (Belden, MS) and his show of lights. The evening will feature a silent auction with antiques, art, pottery, and services from local businesses. The special event will also showcase attorneys, legislators, and others in this area. The monies raised will be used to help fund the many programs that NMRLS provides for low-income individuals living in the northern 39 counties of Mississippi. Last year, they served more than 10,000 individuals, handling cases in (among other things) finance, family law, elder care, housing including foreclosure prevention, protection from domestic violence, and veteran affairs. NMRLS has been in existence for nearly 50 years. Since its inception in 1966, NMRLS has served hundreds-of-thousands of individuals. In recent years, the organization has had to turn away nearly half of the people in need of their services due to the lack of funding.
