Mar 5 Mississippi Department of Education Literacy Parent Meeting |
Due to inclement weather last week, Mississippi Department of Education officials rescheduled their regional literacy parent meeting in Oxford for Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 6 p.m. at the Oxford Conference Center. The literacy parent meeting will help north Mississippi parents learn ways to strengthen their children's early literacy skills and is specifically designed for parents of Kindergarten through third-grade students. Oxford School District officials encourage parents to attend because state education officials will provide an overview of the Mississippi Literacy-Based Promotion Act. Parents will learn strategies during the regional meeting that they can use at home to help their children improve their reading. The Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which emphasizes reading instruction in Kindergarten through third grade, focuses on prevention and intervention to help children develop the reading skills required for fourth grade. The legislation requires that third-grade students who do not meet reading standards by the end of the school year will not be promoted to fourth grade. No registration is required to attend. For more information about the regional literacy parent meeting, contact Tina Sellers in MDE's Office of Professional Development at (601) 359-2869. |

Mar 21 Oxford School District Educator Recruitment Fair |
The Oxford School District will host an Educator Recruitment Fair Saturday, March 21, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Oxford High School, 101 Charger Loop in Oxford. Prospective teachers and administrators are encouraged to attend the event and bring a current resume. Principals from each of the district's schools will be present to meet potential candidates. "The educator recruitment fair is an opportunity for those seeking teaching positions to meet with those who hire teachers," said Bill Hamilton, assistant superintendent with the Oxford School District. "Our school district principals and administrators come to this one central location for a day of focused interaction with candidates." Those who should attend the Educator Recruitment Fair are teacher candidates who have one of the following: have a Mississippi preliminary certificate, have a professional teaching credential, have a professional teaching credential from outside the state of Mississippi, will have teaching credentials by the fall of 2015, or have at least one year of experience in a teaching intern program. "Candidates can have questions answered about our district's programs and potential teaching position openings and find out more about the Oxford School District," added Hamilton. The Oxford School District is an Equal Opportunity Employer. For more information on the Oxford School District Educator Recruitment Fair, call Assistant Superintendent Bill Hamilton at (662) 234-3541 or email whamilton@oxfordsd.org.
