Oct 1    Sewing with a Pattern at Communiversity

NEW! Sewing with a Pattern

Participants will learn how to read a commercial pattern, lay out fabric and pattern pieces, and cut out and stitch up a simple garment or accessory. Using one of a list of pattern options including bags, skirts, and pajama pants, Andi Bedsworth will lead class members through all construction steps. Participants must bring your own sewing machine and have taken a basic sewing course similar to Communiversity’s Basic Sewing 101.

A supply list will be distributed with registration confirmation. The total cost of supplies will be approximately $35.

Oct 6 - Oct 15    Vote for your favorite Oxford Film Fest short!
The Oxford Film Festival is hosting an online showcase of their alumni filmmakers’ short films by partnering with The Audience Awards for a “Best of Shorts Fest” award. The contest is comprised of short films that have screened at the Oxford Film Festival during the past 12 years. The short film contest hosted by the Audience Awards will take place from 

The Audience Awards is a great way to watch a variety of films created by Oxford Film Fest alumni as well as give film fans an opportunity to support their favorite filmmakers and give them some recognition. All they need to do is vote on the Audience Awards website anytime between October 6 - October 15, 2015. 

The winner is awarded an all-expenses trip (flight, hotel and VIP pass) to the 2016 Oxford Film Festival (February 17-21, 2016), will receive the film festival’s celebrated Hoka Award during the awards ceremony and have a re-screening of the film. The second and third runners up will receive credit from

Oct 7    Free Art Classes for Adults-Art with a Kick!
Adults over the age of 40 are invited to participate in a free series of art classes through their Oxford Leisure and Lifestyles program at OPC. We will be working on various techniques and exploring different media. Class format is relaxed and process is valued more than product. The point of these classes is to have fun experimenting with art, and no experience is necessary. No advanced registration is required and students do not have to attend every class. We will begin making color wheels learning about color theory and will progress to learning about texture and line.

Theatre Oxford is pleased to present its annual Ten Minute Play Festival, featuring five ten-minute plays. This year's plays include Take Wing, the LW Thomas Award Winner from the Ten Minute Play Readings; Gram Scams, the Audience Award Winner from the Ten Minute Play Readings; Soccer Lessons, by local playwright Daniell Mattern; Lipstick, a finalist at the Ten Minute Play Readings; and Buck Meets the Devil, a revival of Dave Bell's popular ten-minute play. The Festival features a score of local performers and directors and is a fabulous opportunity to support local art. Performances are October 8, 9, and 11 at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. The October 8 and 9 performances are at 7:00 PM; the October 11 performance is at 2:00 PM. A cash bar will be available at all performances. Tickets for students, seniors, and Theatre Oxford members are $10. Tickets for non-members are $15. Tickets will be on sale at the door if available!

The Oxford Eagle and SuperTalk Mississippi 93.7 will host a candidate debate and forum at the Oxford Conference Center. The event will broadcast live on 93.7. Candidates from Lafayette County's supervisor Districts 1, 3 and 5 have been invited along with candidates in the House District 12 and Senate District 9 races. Candidates will be asked specific questions. Water and coffee will be provided.
