Yocona International Folk Festival and Yoknapatawpha Arts Council invite you to an exploration of the music of Senegal. "Njum Waalo", a family of 5 musicians from Dakar, on the Atlantic Cap-Vert peninsula of western Africa, brings their music to us. Their 2013 tour of the USA brings them to stop off in Oxford between performances in Memphis and New Orleans. Rhythms and stories of aboriginal Senegal illuminate the fusion between African cultures and early European instruments and harmonies. This powerful merger of musical cultures gave us today's unique and priceless Mississippi delta and hill country blues... and jazz, rock & roll, even hip hop and rap. You will understand that Mississippi is truly "the birthplace of American music"!
